A small area coalition should consist of 3 parts, minimum.
- Core Workgroup: The core workgroup manages coalition efforts and causes, creates the action plan, tracks progress against the plan, and evaluates and adapts plan as needed. Manages coalition finances, members, meeting schedules, media and assets
- Full Coalition Members: These members drive success at an everyday community level, provide support to workgroup, add perspective, and ensure checks and balance to core workgroup.
- Steering Committee: Essentially a board, the steering committee ensures the core workgroup is supported and informed. Includes a local champion and provides area specific knowledge and fills gaps, such as a local politician making sure proper permits for events are obtained, or a pediatrician advising on dangers of underage drinking to avoid misinformation.
