When inviting members to join the coalition in any capacity, be prepared to answer the question, “what’s in it for me?” Joining a coalition is extra work on top of people’s current jobs and time commitments. Be sure to tie the cause back to them. Have a benefit statement ready. Here’s how to make one yourself.
Ask yourself these questions when crafting a response to this question.
- How large of an issue is this cause in the community?
- How much will the community benefit from action on this cause?
- How does their time or services directly affect the success of the cause in the community?
- How does the issue affect them, their family, or their business?
- What is your heart statement? If you have one, share a personal story or compelling data point. Make an emotional connection. This can help them feel connected to the issue, like a “call to arms.”
